Main Article Content
Abstract
The floating knee is an entity that creates a challenge for the traumatologist, it occurs after high impact mechanisms, so it is usually accompanied by multiple systemic injuries that often have fatal outcomes or leave permanent functional
disabilities. This type of injury generally requires initial salvage surgical treatment to stabilize the patient before planning definitive surgery. It presents itself in several ways and its prognosis and success in surgery will depend on this. The main objective of surgical treatment should be based on the principles of fracture reduction, such as restoration of the joint surface, recovery of the axis, recovery of functionality and preservation of vascularity. With an accurate diagnosis and proper surgical planning, these injuries can be treated with a variety of methods and techniques, including external stent systems, anatomical plates, and intramedullary nails.
